St. Charles East varsity girls’ golf placed third at the regional tournament at Randall Oaks Golf Club on Oct. 1, with an overall score of 365 strokes, advancing them to 2A Sectionals at Atwood Homestead Golf Course.
Senior Manuela Ramirez, who was ranked number one on the varsity team, said leading up to regionals, “I couldn’t practice much, mostly chipping, putting, maybe a few full swings before regionals. I was nervous. It was the first tournament I played after my injury, so I was trying to relax and focus on my game, not my injury.”
After being out for one and a half months with a spinal injury that she still has, Ramirez made a comeback placing fourth (81), along with junior Charlotte Tassone in eighth place (87) and junior Oliva Vosburgh who placed ninth (88).
Players that also competed in regionals included senior Ivana Virden, senior Emma Jones and sophomore Emily Guerts.
Coach Jarod Gutesha said leading up to regionals, “This group was very practice-oriented. There’s times when you get a group [and] for whatever reason their mind’s elsewhere; they get out of school, come out onto the course, and have to chitchat for a little while before they get focused,” said Gutesha. “But this group did our talking in the beginning, and when it was time to start practicing, they started getting after it.”
Girls’ golf made it up to sectionals at Itasca Country Club to end their season. Ramirez placed second (77), Guerts placed sixth (86) and Virden place tenth (91).
Gutesha thanked seniors Ramirez, Virden and Jones for their final season.
