By now, many of you have probably heard of or seen the summer blockbuster, “Twisters.” The movie is set in the midwestern and southern United States, specifically Oklahoma. It follows Kate Carter, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Tyler Owens, played by Glen Powell, as they chase after deadly tornadoes and attempt to save local towns from disaster in new scientific ways. The two developing characters fall easily into a rom-com-like banter, intriguing the viewers as they put on a remarkable performance.
The movie was loosely based on the 1996 film “Twister,” but the directors and team behind “Twisters” did not give any information as to whether it was a sequel or a remake. Seeming to be a little of both, the film included similar aspects to the original but did not directly mention any relation to the plot or storyline of “Twister.”
Both films followed characters that were similar in their backstories and personality arcs. The main characters of the two both had lost a loved one to a tornado and went on to continue their passions of storm chasing. The plots of the movies were somewhat similar, with a common theme of saving victims from tornadoes.
Aside from the references to the movie “Twister,” there was another noticeable homage to a devastating tornado that happened not too long ago. In the finale of the movie, Edgar-Jones’ and Powell’s characters can be seen helping residents of the town of El Reno, Oklahoma into nearby shelters, protecting them from the approaching tornado. The tornado showcased a very similar funnel to that of the El Reno-Piedmont EF-5 tornado that struck the area in 2013. The El Reno-Piedmont tornado is the widest recorded tornado in history, reaching 2.6 miles wide at its peak. It was later confirmed by directors that the scene was inspired by the tornado.
With the effects of CGI and surround sound, the movie is best seen in theaters. While watching intensely scary tornadoes on screen, it is possible to feel immersed in the tornado yourself. 4D theaters across the country provided extreme experiences mimicking the tornado-chasing experience; from shaking chairs to water droplets and wind, the watching experience was nothing short of amazing.
Overall, “Twisters” is a summer must-see. Heart-throbbing performances from Edgar-Jones and Powell are perfectly set in a wild and exhilarating atmosphere filled with fear-inducing tornadoes. Featuring elements connected to previous movies as well as real life, “Twisters” is a place you can go to escape for a thrilling two hours of fun.
