Last year, St. Charles celebrated 50 years of women’s sports in its high schools, a huge milestone for female athletes. This year, to further encourage the involvement of women in sports, St. Charles East introduced its first-ever girls’ flag football team. East was just one of the schools that introduced a flag football program this year. Other schools in the area, like Geneva and Wheaton North, also introduced the sport this year.
Head coach Zachary Hendry was proud to be involved in such a historical team, paving the way for future athletes. “We got to build traditions, learn together and represent our school in a whole new way,” said Hendry, “The girls that were a part of the program for year one, will hopefully remember this for a very long time!”
This historical team finished the season ranked 68th in the state. The girls had some impressive wins, such as their home game against the Glenbard North Panthers. The Saints were able to beat the Panthers in a shutout game with a score of 33-0. Hendry was proud of the team, no matter how they played.
“Win or lose, we competed every game,” Hendry said, “We grew as athletes and as a program this season.”
At their regional playoffs, the team was able to win the quarter-final against Addison-Trail with a score of 35-12. However, they were unable to make it past the semi-final against West Aurora. Coach Hendry considered the regional playoffs “unforgettable.” It was a “close, hard-fought battle” showing off “[their] teamwork and determination.”
Even though the team’s season had to come to an end at the semi-final, it was still a memorable experience. Hendry said, “Being part of the first team was special—we set the foundation for future players.”
The coaches hope for the program to grow in the coming years as it gains awareness, and that more girls will consider joining the team next year.
