This month, many new horror films are set for release. From themes of haunting and witches to liminal spaces and disappearances, May has much to look forward to in this film genre.
The first movie, Hokum, will be released on May first. In Hokum, actor Adam Scott plays a novelist, Ohm Bauman, who travels to an inn in Ireland to spread his parents’ ashes. While there, he starts to notice odd and out-of-place people and behaviors. When a staff member goes missing, he begins to realize something is very wrong at the inn. His curiosity is piqued when he finds the honeymoon suite locked, and no one is willing to unlock it. Critics who have already seen the film say it uses atmosphere to build suspense rather than relying on simple jump scares, resulting in a thrilling experience.
The next movie after Hokum is Obsession. When the main character, Bear, buys a “One Wish Willow,” he wishes for his crush, Nikki, to love him. This wish backfires, and Nikki becomes extremely infatuated with Bear. This infatuation leads to erratic behavior and eventually, even murder. In the end, there is a resolution, but not necessarily a happy one. The movie will come out on May 16.
On May 22, Passenger will be released. The movie follows a couple after they witness a car accident and realize a demonic presence is trailing them. The thought-provoking slogan featured in trailers and posters states, “130 million people take road trips every year. 15,400 of them are never seen again.”
The most anticipated film, Backrooms, is set for release on May 29. The Kane Parsons film takes the online backrooms phenomenon to another level, featuring found-footage clips and an eerie soundtrack. The film centers on the existence of liminal spaces, showing one way to access them in a furniture store. The movie follows the store’s owner, Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He finds this other liminal dimension and mentions it to his therapist, who initially does not believe him. To prove to the therapist that this space is real, they both enter and explore it. In the space, nothing seems to be in its rightful place and mysterious, unexplainable events occur. This peculiar, liminal thriller has already gained attention on social media, ensuring a large attendance on its release date.
