The girls’ tennis team has had a very impressive season this year. The team came in the top three at all of their invites this season and came in third place at conference. One of the team’s greatest accomplishments was winning sectionals.
Making it through sectionals and qualifying for state were seniors Kelsey Jacob, Lea Forsell, Layla Sutaria, junior Harper Charlson and freshman Greta Mazurova. Both Jacob and Charlson also qualified the previous year. This year, Charlson and Mazurova played as a doubles pair, as did Forsell and Sutaria. Jacob played alone as a single.
Jacob initially tied 5-7, 6-3 in the first round and proceeded to play a tiebreaker game to determine who would continue to the next round. The tiebreaker would be won by the first player to score 10 points. Jacob lost the tiebreaker 4-10. She then played in the consolation bracket, where she lost 6-3, 6-0.
Forsell and Sutaria lost 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the championship bracket of the tournament. They were given another chance to compete in the consolation bracket, where they lost 6-3, 6-1.
The doubles pair, Charlson and Mazurova, won the first round 6-3, 6-4, moving onto the second round. In the second round, they lost 6-1, 6-2 and later lost 7-5, 6-1 in the consolation bracket.
“State was such a fun experience both on and off the court. It was a great opportunity to see the best teams play and to grow as a player,” said Mazurova. Even against the strongest competition in the state, the Saints held their own.
While the three seniors—Jacob, Forsell and Sutaria—will be graduating, Charlson and Mazurova will have a chance to qualify for State again next year. The seniors leave a legacy of competitive excellence and sportsmanship, and the younger players are prepared to build on it and create a legacy of their own.
