St. Charles East High School’s theater department debuted their performance of “Emily Brontë Teenage Necromancer” on Oct. 17, 2025 with following performances on October 18 and 19.
A little bit of background on “Emily Brontë”: it is a supernatural story set in Yorkshire moors, England. The story is about young Emily discovering her mysterious powers between life and death. Emily must choose between controlling her gift or letting it consume her life after the spirits influence her world. Taking place in the early 19th century, the story is a mix of historical and paranormal themes.
The production was very well done. The set was detailed and I could tell the crew put a lot of effort in. I especially liked the ominous tone that was set in graveyard scenes through the details such as the vines and moss on the grave markers. Not only was the set good quality, the costumes were outstanding. I thought the dresses especially looked great, they were very well done and looked professionally made. I was in awe of the attention to detail and how well they fit the time period; they were a real eye catcher.
I felt very intrigued and immersed throughout the entire play from their interactive and mysterious beginning. One thing I think they could potentially have developed more immersion would be stronger pacing in the dialogue delivery between actors.
I was impressed with the smoothness of transitions from each scene, it was very professional and swiftly done. In addition to the professionalism they held, the lighting and sound effects were outstanding. The lighting was colorful and striking, which occasionally sunk up with the sound effects when needed, which is a detail I noticed that added a lot to the play.
I thought it was a great production and I could tell the cast and crew put a lot of time and effort into perfecting their performance all around.
